Introduction

This introductory chapter outlines the format of the book and motivation for its creation. The cycle that a musical work travels from the composer’s idea through the listener’s reaction to the piece is presented. Comparison is made between the scientific process and this creation of a musical piece. The role of physics in acoustics and the relation between the elements of the STEM subjects and music is discussed. Finally, an introduction to waves in physics and music is presented.
