A Digital Twin System to Support Decision Making for the Circular Economy

The circular economy is widely regarded as a key enabler for improving the sustainability of consumer product lifecycles. However, due to the uncertainties introduced during the lifetime of products, the implementation of circular economy strategies can be complex. Additionally, since the circular economy is still an emerging concept, its long-term development is uncertain. In this context, the paper presents a digital twin system to virtualize selected aspects of consumer product lifecycles in order to support decision making in relation to the implementation of circular economy strategies. The paper also presents an illustrative example of the application of the proposed digital twin system, which focusses on supporting decision making related to the circular economy of high-voltage, automotive battery systems.
