Theory Extrapolated from Literature

The previous chapters have outlined the various ways in which theory enters into literature: the modes, levels, and functions of these transitions. There have also been hints at possible extrapolations of new theory from literary texts; this final chapter, however, may help to further deepen the understanding of how literature can actively contribute to the modification and creation of theory. The chapter distinguishes three ways in which literature influences theory: (a) the advancement of theory within literature in ways that are inaccessible through traditional academic routines—what might be called ‘non-theoretical’ forms of theory, (b) theoretical remarks within literary texts, and (c) a general inspiration of theory by literature.
