Situated Mathematical Modelling for Learning Product Design Engineering
摘要
In this chapter, we explore the integration of mathematics and engineering through mathematical modelling. Drawing on situated learning as our theoretical framework, the research took place in a mathematical modelling course for engineers at a Colombian university. We analysed documents, video recordings, and field notes through content analyses. These data were produced by students when developing mathematical modelling projects. We identified four types of mathematical modelling processes conditioned by the formal and functional aspects of a product, as well as user demands and preferences. Finally, a mathematical modelling and engineering integrated process is described from subject participation, context, and professional practices.
