Modelling in the Life of People: An Alternative Programme for Teaching and Learning of Mathematics

We propose, based on empirical evidence, that there is a category of modelling mathematics that is specific to people who value the horizontal and reciprocal relationships between mathematics and the real world, and that their practices constitute resignifications of their mathematical knowledge. This knowledge is permeated by cultures that combine the locality and globality of the know-how. The temporality of knowledge combines the present and the future in the classroom to approach reality and the use of mathematical knowledge that combines the reciprocal and horizontal relationality of the diversity of mathematical knowledge. The synthesis of this knowledge is the resignification of the mathematical knowledge that emerges in people. We propose that this synthesis is a category of mathematical modelling and should be the frame of reference for improving the teaching and learning of mathematics.
