Ethnomodelling as the Glocalization of Mathematical Practices

Ethnomodelling addresses a holistic view of mathematical knowledge that connects cultural (emic) and academic (etic) aspects of mathematics. Thus, the use of emic (local) and etic (global) approaches enables the translation of mathematical practices developed by members from distinct cultural groups to understand phenomena that occur in their daily life. The emic (local) approach is essential to acknowledge the intuitive understanding of mathematical ideas, procedures, and practices adopted by these members, whereas the etic (global) approach is necessary to compare these techniques to each other. However, the dialogic (glocal) approach matches the emic (local) and etic (global) approaches because it seeks a broad and wide understanding of the mathematical knowledge developed by members of distinct cultures through history.
