Boston, 1909–1910

Upon finding nothing from Manly when she arrived in the States in early 1909, Edith necessarily took a position at D. C. Heath & Co. Kate’s letters and Edith’s letters to Burroughs indicate how miserable she was. For the firm she mainly worked on revising the Arden Shakespeare, especially A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In her own time she wrote stories and, with Jessie Paton, prepared a collection of American lyrics (1912). She left Heath & Co. in late 1910, when she also declined—with some embarrassment—Cooley’s invitation that she join him in an investigation of industrial education in Germany and Austria. She moved instead to Everybody’s Magazine in New York and then The Ladies’ Home Journal in Philadelphia.
