New Technological Directions for a Sustainable Development and Sustainability

One of the fundamental problems in modern economies is high carbon emissions and diffusion of pollutants from industrial activities focused on fossil-based energy that increases atmospheric greenhouse gases, particulates and other atmospheric pollution that generate detrimental effects on climate, environment and health of human and animal population. This study confronts this problem by detecting emerging technologies that improve the utilization of natural resources to support a sustainable development by reducing negative effects of industrial and human activities on atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and the total environment and the transformation of low-carbon economies and societies. Results here show new and emerging technologies with a high sustainability perspective for producing renewable energy and supporting the decarbonization for a transition and sustainable development, such as technologies for offshore wind turbines, carbon capture storage, cellular agriculture and blockchain. Hence, findings here bring us to suggest new technological directions that can guide the industrial, economic and social change in a perspective of One Health (health of people, animals, and ecosystems) that can lay the foundations for a sustainable development directed to the long-run goal of, whenever possible, a CO2-free global economy for beneficial effects for total environment and human society.
