摘要

Fruit and vegetable wastes (FVWs) are a major threat to the environment due to their high production and harmful effects on the ecosystem. This chapter investigates the environmental consequences of FVWs and suggests viable management solutions to limit their effects. The inadequate handling of FVWs resulting from production, distribution, and consumer activities emit significant amounts of organic matter and nutrients. These wastes decompose, generating greenhouse gases like CH4, and causing climate change. Furthermore, FVWs contribute to water pollution by allowing nutrient-rich runoff to enter water bodies, leading to eutrophication, and affecting aquatic life. To address these issues several management techniques are suggested: (i) waste reduction at the source through improved harvesting practices and consumer awareness campaigns can reduce overall FVW creation, (ii) composting provides a remedy by encouraging aerobic decomposition, lowering CH4 emissions, and creating nutrient-rich compost, which improves soil health and agricultural output, and (iii) biochar generation from FVWs by pyrolysis is a feasible choice. Biochar, which is a stable form of carbon, absorbs carbon dioxide and hence reduces GHG emissions while boosting soil fertility and water retention. Likewise, the use of biochar extends the life of compost-derived carbon in soil and magnifies its climatic advantages. A comprehensive waste management solution is developed by integrating composting and biochar generation, successfully minimizing the environmental impact of FVWs on GHG emissions. By emphasizing these tactics, we may create a framework for a circular economy that turns trash into useful resources, promoting sustainability and combating climate change.
