This chapter delves into the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in understanding, detecting, and treating neurodegenerative diseases, a subject of great relevance given the global rise of these complex disorders. AI’s role in medical diagnosis forms the crux of the initial discussion, setting the stage for a detailed examination of AI techniques tailored for neurodegenerative diseases. We then explore the multifaceted applications of AI, encompassing disease detection, diagnosis, progression modeling, and personalized treatment recommendations, with emphasis on their strengths and potential limitations. The case studies provide practical insights into the deployment of AI in real-world clinical settings. Subsequently, we discuss vital challenges confronting the integration of AI in neurodegenerative disease detection, including data privacy, AI model interpretability, potential biases, technological and resource constraints, as well as ethical and regulatory considerations. Shifting the focus to the future, we envisage opportunities poised at the intersection of AI and neurodegenerative diseases. These include AI-enabled drug discovery and the role of AI in advancing neuroimaging techniques, both of which promise a paradigm shift in our approach to managing these diseases. In conclusion, we encapsulate the key takeaways and potential future directions. By exploring AI’s myriad possibilities, this chapter underscores the potential of these technologies in revolutionizing neurodegenerative disease detection and management while also grappling with the challenges that accompany this new frontier in healthcare.
