Within statistics, we often distinguish between descriptive statisticsDescriptive statistics and statistical inferenceStatistical inference. Descriptive statistics primarily involves summarizing data through various measures of central tendency, dispersion, and covariation. Common quantities that are then calculated are mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation, covariance, and correlation. Graphical presentation of the data (data visualization) is also a form of descriptive statistics.
