Teaching to Speak Up

Speaking up may not be easy but important and empowering for family caregivers (FCs). This chapter describes challenges for patients with breast cancer and their FCs. Waiting for results of a biopsy can be anxiety producing. This chapter reflects on receiving bad news and provides tips on handling bad news. Tips are discussed for calling a healthcare provider (HCP) and receiving follow-up care. Breast cancer treatment options are described as we look at how these options can be individualized for each patient’s needs and preferences. Tips for FCs are provided on how to care for a loved one with breast cancer and themselves. Communication tips for cancer FCs are presented. Finally, “Speak Up” campaigns from the Joint Commission are reviewed and the importance of speaking up emphasized.
