When the Family Caregiver Knows Best

  • Nadine Wodwaski

摘要

Family caregivers (FCs) assist patients living with complex health conditions, such as progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Yet, when these patients are admitted to the acute care setting, there is a gap in care if healthcare providers (HCPs) overlook FCs as essential members of the healthcare team. FCs become invisible and their voices never heard. Failing to value the FCs knowledge and expertise may lead to problematic patient situations, such as decreasing patient independence and patient dignity in decision-making. As nurses, we lead the way in developing a collaborative approach, enhancing the relationship between FCs and HCPs. Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs), in particular, lead system changes by preparing staff to embrace FCs and their wisdom and embracing families as strong allies to help HCPs work toward improving patient and FC quality of life. When this happens, HCPs partner with FCs, being inclusive while attempting to understand how to care for such patients. The mission is to help create a future where FCs are seen, heard, understood, valued, connected, and supported, thus enhancing the advancement of FC care.
