Tetracyclic Antidepressants or NaSSA

Tetracyclic antidepressants or NaSSA (for noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants) have in common that they inhibit adrenergic autoreceptors, thus promoting the release of noradrenaline in the synaptic space. They also inhibit the adrenergic heteroreceptors of serotonergic neurons, promoting, in addition to the release of noradrenaline, that of serotonin in the synaptic space. The two main molecules of this family of antidepressants used in veterinary medicine, mianserin and mirtazapine, are prescribed off-label.
