Can Gravitation Be Explained?

In Einstein’s theory the phenomenon of gravitation is shown to be a necessary consequence of the “curvature” (or non-Euclidean geometry) of the space and time around heavy masses. It is sometimes said that Einstein explains gravitation by attributing curvature to space and time; but this scarcely conveys the right impression of the purpose and achievement of his theory.
