Coaching students to be self-directed, lifelong learners acts as an integral element to academic and career success. Thus, feedback must be focused on meeting the student where they are in the learning process and what skills they need to advance toward mastery. Students must be afforded the opportunity to learn from formative assessments, such as classroom activities and written examinations; skills practice days in pre-clinical years; preceptors during their clinical rotations; and to develop the skills to become experts in their chosen medical field.
