Assessing the Benefits of Urban Runoff Pollution Control Measures

With the increasing urbanization rates, the issue of runoff pollution has become a critical concern in comprehensive urban water environment management. This study proposes a novel concept of a grey-green storage system to improve rainwater management and urban water environment governance. The objective is to investigate the pollutant removal efficiency of grey storage tanks while integrating low impact development (LID) green facilities with storage functions. The assessment method encompasses economic benefits, runoff reduction, energy savings, environmental benefits, climate benefits, and social benefits. Green infrastructure solutions, such as green roofs, bioretention systems, and permeable pavements, are analyzed and compared in various scenarios within a 25-year lifecycle. The results demonstrate that green roofs provide the highest benefits, followed by bioretention systems, while permeable pavements have the lowest benefits due to limited quantification methods. The findings from this research contribute to a comprehensive understanding of storage facilities' impact on urban water management and highlight the potential of the proposed grey-green storage system in sustainable rainwater management.
