Addressing Breast Cancer Disparities in Advancements for Conquering Drug Resistance

Breast cancer is a global concern with high morbidity and mortality rates. While incidence rates remain high in developed countries compared to low-middle-income countries (LMICs), relatively high mortality rates are reported in LMICs. Notably, such disproportions also exist within the same country, with rural areas often carrying the brunt of this disease. BC is a multifactorial concept where a broad research gap exists on the influence of non-scientific and inherent factors collide, leading to BC drug resistance. This chapter discusses the significance of addressing these disparities. Disparities exist in terms of equality and equity, including access to healthcare, quality of care, and representation in clinical trials. Socioeconomic and structural barriers also exist and can contribute to differential outcomes in BC patients. In addressing these disparities, this chapter highlights the need for community engagement, inclusive research efforts, and tailored interventions to overcome these disparities. Furthermore, by addressing these gaps, which pose as primary barriers, an integrated patient-centered approach is warranted and will be the most valuable tool in ensuring more equitable outcomes in the fight against drug-resistant BC.
