Emerging Therapeutic Approaches in Drug-Resistant Breast Cancer

Breast cancer, a heterogeneous and complex disease, remains a significant healthcare challenge around the world, with drug resistance being a major impediment to successful treatment. Traditional treatment regimens are frequently met with resistance mechanisms, resulting in treatment failure and disease progression. In the past few years, there has been a paradigm shift in the approach to battling drug-resistant breast cancer, with the introduction of innovative treatment techniques including immunotherapy, gene therapy, and epigenetic modelling. Immunotherapy has shown great promise in terms of boosting the host immunity to detect and eradicate cancer cells, as well as efficiently overcoming resistance mechanisms. New treatments for drug-resistant breast cancer show promise in clinical trials, including immune checkpoint inhibitors and CAR-T cell therapy. Another novel approach is gene therapy, which addresses drug resistance through targeted genetic modifications. Scientists are researching ways to combat drug-resistant breast cancer cells, including gene editing, gene silencing, and oncolytic viruses. The aim is to increase sensitivity in these cells and improve treatment outcomes for patients. Gene therapy can modulate drug metabolism and improve drug delivery which holds promise for circumventing resistance mechanisms. Epigenetic modelling is a powerful tool to reprogram cancer cells by manipulating epigenetic marks and overcoming drug resistance. Epigenetic modifiers hold the potential to revive the sensitivity of drugs in breast cancer cells that have lost their initial responsiveness. This valuable information suggests a promising avenue for the development of effective treatment options for patients with drug-resistant breast cancer. Combination therapy can be a valuable tool in attacking various oncogenic signaling pathways at the same time, which will aid in overcoming resistance to medication and achieving improved clinical results for patients with breast cancer.
