Human Resources Management in Hotels

The hotel sector is fast-growing and contributes significantly to the global economy; it is also the biggest employer in the global hospitality and tourism industry. The sector peaked at 1.52 trillion US dollars in 2019, estimated to reach 1.21 trillion US dollars in 2023 after the drop between 2020 and 2022 due to COVID-19 (Statista, 2023). McCain (2023) reports that there are at least 187,000 hotels worldwide, making the hospitality industry worth over 4.6 trillion US dollars in 2022 and the hotel market worth over 1.5 trillion US dollars in 2019. According to Thoreson (2023), reporting on the AHLA survey, 47% of the hotels in the research were severely understaffed in 2021, making it impossible to fill the available vacancies. Managing people in the hotel sector is challenging, particularly in terms of recruitment, training, and talent management.
