Disclosure Practices for Tackling Climate Change in Large Spanish Listed Companies

The problems associated with climate change have increased enormously in recent years. Addressing these problems requires drastic action from the public sector and also the private sector. Large private companies have a key role to play because they have a strong influence on the economy, society and the environment. It is therefore essential to analyze how these companies address climate change and how they inform their stakeholders. It is essential to identify whether there is a real commitment or if they are merely engaging in greenwashing practices. This chapter aims to examine how the large Spanish companies that make up the Ibex-35 index inform of their efforts against climate change. We can expect these large companies to follow a communication strategy based on the use of various channels to reflect a real commitment. Therefore, we have analyzed the information provided on their official websites, sustainability reports and through the social network Twitter. Finally, we present a climate change disclosure score for this set of companies that allows us to reflect a mapping for the Spanish case that can be extrapolated to other countries or markets.
