The process through which the British colonial government developed and changed its laws and regulations to govern Chinese secret societies in Malaya after 1867 is the primary focus of this chapter. I argue that there were three major turning points that played a crucial role in stimulating the shift in British control—from mere supervision to active suppression—of Chinese secret societies, which were increasingly regarded as ‘dangerous societies,’ during the period between 1867 and 1890.
