Classifications Cannot Be Right or Wrong—Bach in Brazil

Classification (categorization) of things may be seen partly as a language question. How we classify things is expressed through language, through giving things linguistic labels/names. The question of classifying things relates directly to that of definitions and meaning. There are no natural/objective classifications. Any classification can be challenged. Some classifications may be unrewarding, others even dangerous. The question of classifications is very relevant in all walks of life. Classification in the political sphere invites special attention; it may have formidable social consequences. Some classifications may be useful, others not necessarily so. Classifications simplify complex phenomena. Classifications which use highly abstract categories such as ‘conservatives’ and ‘liberals’ may be useless and also misleading.
