Meaning Is Imprecise: It Will Always Be So!

Some people believe that precise definitions of words are possible. This belief is related to the belief that correct definitions of words are possible. Both beliefs are a fantasy. This can be shown, for example, by doing an ‘infinite regress of definitions’ exercise. Other arguments against this fantasy can be brought out. Even when we talk to people that we know very well (like members of the family) we may differ as to what we mean when using the same words. This is because we always differ as to the experience standing behind the meaning of words.
