Why Talk About Language?

Language is sometimes mentioned as a reason for conflict. Hate speech is often invoked in this regard. The role of language in politics, journalism, business, etc. seems undeniable. Christiane Amanpour’s (a chief international anchor for CNN) programs illustrate this fact. Linguists such as Deborah Tannen and George Lakoff have tried to show the general public how important language is in politics, law, marriage, etc. The common view seems to be, however, that it is not important to be seriously concerned with language. Communication is mentioned by Yuval Noah Harari as one of the four most important domains/skills that should be considered seriously in the educational process. The current times can be characterized by a wide disrespect for expert knowledge.
