Look up at the night sky through a telescope and you see that not everything has the point-like appearance of a star: some celestial objects are diffuse, extended sources of light—nebulae. Some nebulae are the remains of stars. Some nebulae, though, are galaxies—collections of myriads of stars, their brightness made dim by distance.
