A well-designed laboratory is essential to the practice of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) as the Mohs lab interfaces with a complex flow of tissue specimen processing and staff in a dynamic workspace. The Mohs lab houses equipmentEquipment and personnel requiring adequate space and workflowWorkflow to perform the critical steps of MMS—accessioning, mapping and inking, embedding, microtomyMicrotomy, staining, and interpretation of Mohs frozen section tissue. A thoughtful lab design allows the Mohs technicians and surgeons to function safely and efficiently to deliver the highest standard of patient care in MMS. Lab design and equipment selection are critical to facilitate high-quality tissue processing, optimize health and safety, and meet regulatory standardsStandards. Individual variables such as case volume, lab staffing, space constraints, budget, and local regulations also warrant consideration. While there is no single ideal Mohs lab layout, this chapter will outline key principles to guide important design decisions.
