摘要

The letter is an entity of the social ontology. It has its proper home and raison d’être in letter-text, aka the string. Its proper business is occurring in text. The work of text, in its turn, is to be the playground for occurring. Thus, the occurrent-occurrence distinction is at the heart of what the letter is about. The popular type-token distinction only has a secondary role. Type-token addresses the causa materialis of the letter. It is concerned with how, in real situations, we make text available. Occurrent-occurrence addresses the causa finalis. It is concerned with what text is for.
