Influence of Heat Treatment on the Properties of Titanium Alloy Used for Implants Produced by DMLS Additive Technology

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of heat treatment and electrochemical surface treatment on the physical and chemical properties of Ti6Al7Nb alloy used on implants in bone surgery, developed by the additive technology DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering). The alloy with a high biocompatibility and mechanical properties was used. In order to select the optimal functional properties of the metal biomaterial, the samples obtained by 3D printing were subjected to heat treatment and anodic oxidation. Four different cooling media were used (air, water, oil and an atmosphere of rapidly expanding argon). Surface roughness, hardness and resistance to pitting corrosion were tested. At the same time based on computed tomography, a personalized implant was designed and manufactured to reconstruct the diseased jawbone. Based on the obtained test results, the optimal type of both heat treatment and anodic oxidation parameters for printed mandibular bone implant was selected.
