Delinquency among Juveniles in the Caribbean: Trends, Factors, and Determinants

  • Godfrey St. Bernard

摘要

This chapter focuses upon violence and criminal episodes committed by young persons who have attained the age of criminal responsibility and within the maximal age for prosecution as a child. Relying on evidence from existing research and analysing data from a law enforcement authority, the chapter showcases characteristic features, trends, and patterns pertaining to arrests among young persons aged 10–17 years charged for being in conflict with the law in selected Caribbean states, and making specific reference to outcomes during the period 2015–2019 in Trinidad and Tobago. Recognizing school environments and other sites as critical in addressing juvenile delinquency, the chapter provides a substantive commentary of trends, factors, and determinants pertaining to juvenile delinquency in Anglophone Caribbean states and offers prescriptions that can potentially redress the scourge.
