Outward movement of Caribbean Peoples as tools of Colonial (British) Development attempts to address the extent to which the Victorian era ideology, ‘muscular Christianity’ was used to indoctrinate colonial officials, British colonists and the black masses in the British Caribbean between the 1890s and 1960s. There was a need for fit ‘muscular Christians’ both literally and figuratively. Thus, by way of friendly societies, fraternal orders, and outward movements in search of work, ‘muscular Christianity’ exemplified the British indoctrination of colonial Caribbean peoples as tools of development. However, with all of the indoctrination through basic education, and expressions of patriotism, it was clear that development meant different things for the parties involved given conditions at home and abroad. ‘Muscular Christianity’ had its race-based limitations.
