Theorising Editing

  • Robert M. Davison

摘要

In this closing chapter, I attempt to develop what amounts to a theory of editing. I try to see the world of the editor through the eyes of an anthropologist, to narrate what it is that editors do, and to examine the strategic opportunities that arise. By drawing on my own prior research, i.e. over the last quarter of a century, I formulate a descriptive theory of the world of the editor. I also illustrate this theory with data from my own experience, but observe that this can only be my own experience: each editor needs to apply the theory individually and uniquely. Indeed, they may also feel the need to modify the theory itself.
