Viability of Water Transport: Analysis in the Context of Dhaka

The need for an efficient, eco-friendly circular water transport system is evident in traffic-congested Dhaka, Bangladesh. This research explores the viability of a waterbus route from Banasree to Demra. Data collection involved physical observations, passenger surveys, stakeholder input, and discussions with residents along the proposed route. A mix of objective and subjective methods guided the research, drawing from observations of the Hatirzheel Lake waterbus service and questionnaire, traffic, and stakeholder survey data. Results show higher passenger satisfaction with waterbus travel due to reduced travel time and comfort. Challenges include peak-hour queues, lack of waiting areas, operator facilities, parking, and toilets. Despite these challenges, the successful existing waterbus service can serve as a model for expansion. Implementing waterbus transport offers relief from road congestion, especially with the potential extension North to Purbachal and South to Tarabo, improving citywide connectivity. Government support is crucial for broader acceptance.
