Fermi Problem-Based Learning with Artificial Intelligence: Is It Effective to Develop United Arab Emirates Cycle Three Students’ Twenty-First Century Skills?

New learning approaches and strategies are crucial to be employed to produce students with twenty-first-century skills such as real-life problems solving, creative educational models, and Artificial Intelligence in education to enable them to face new global challenges. Thus, this study employed Fermi Problem-based Learning with Artificial Intelligence (FPBL-AI) model to develop twenty-first century skills in teaching Science (Creative thinking, Critical thinking, Communication skills, and Collaboration skills) among the Cycle Three students in the United Arab Emirates. It also examined the effectiveness of this strategy between male and female students. This study used quasi-experiment design. The instrument for research was pre and post-test using twenty-first century Skills which was prepared by the researchers. The participants purposively selected according to a certain criterion, then divided for the experimental group, consisting of 25 grade ninth students, from Ramah Primary and Secondary School, they were taught Science units using the Fermi Problem-Solving with artificial intelligence model for 6-weeks, Whereas the control group consisted of 25 grade ninth students who were taught the same units using traditional methods. The data were analysed using the t-test to determine the effectiveness of the strategy on developing their twenty-first century skills and to determine the variation in the effectiveness of the strategy between male and female students. The findings revealed the effectiveness of the Fermi problem-based learning with Artificial Intelligence model in developing the twenty-first century skills in teaching Science among the United Arab Emirates Cycle Three students. The findings also demonstrated that there were no significant differences in the effectiveness of the strategy amongst male and female students. Thus, Fermi Problem-Based learning with Artificial Intelligence model is considered an effective approach in teaching Science during provide an interactive learning environment and in improving students’ twenty-first century skills especially creative and critical thinking skills, communication and collaboration skills, and problem-solving skills. In addition, the positive results of this model can help teachers to integrate Fermi Problem-Solving with Artificial Intelligence into their teaching practice in order to achieve the objectives of teaching science in the twenty-first century.
