Adopting the Power of AI Chatbots for Enriching Students Learning in Civil Engineering Education: A Study on Capabilities and Limitations
摘要
Chatbots, as innovative AI-driven communication tools, have revolutionized the way information is exchanged and processed across various sectors, offering an interactive and automated approach to education and research. The integration of AI chatbots, particularly ChatGPT, in civil engineering education is critically examined in this work, focusing on their potential to enhance student learning. ChatGPT's application in various civil engineering education domains, including structural and mechanical analysis, material and structural design, and its utility in undergraduate and graduate education is studied. Through case studies and comprehensive analysis, the strengths of ChatGPT in simplifying complex concepts, aiding in design, and providing programming assistance are evaluated. Recently released plugin functionality was also investigated for specific applications within the Civil Engineering domain. This work also explores the ethical and practical issues of integrating ChatGPT in education, focusing on academic integrity and AI's potential to replace traditional learning methods. In conclusion, the study advocates for a balanced, supplementary role of AI in education and emphasizes the need for ongoing evaluation and adaptation of these tools within the broader Civil Engineering field. The aim is to provide an understanding for educators and students on effectively incorporating AI tools like ChatGPT in civil engineering education, recognizing their limitations and ethical implications. Finally, the need for expert oversight in detailed calculations and decision-making is identified as a key control for results generated by such bots.
