Safaieh District Within the New City

In this chapter, daily activities and narratives of Safaieh’ sSafaieh inhabitants are explored. The aim is to recognize those factors which have influenced the inhabitant decisions to settle into this new district (Figs 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3). As the locale has been developed through internal and external social movements, various social classes of the district were studied in this research. In this substantial area, 177 questionnaires and 16 interviews were completed. Participants are of different genders, ages, and occupations. The chapter begins with general information about SafaiehSafaieh. It discusses the location, the official and class boundariesClass boundaries, as well as the history of the area. Then, based on the triangulation of the collected data, the ethnographical findings are described while referring to the results of the questionnaires and interviewees to highlight those significant factors encouraging the residents of the city to move into this new area. Likewise, the chapter calls attention to the absence of some traditional social activities; driving as a leisure time activity; government and political decisions in the development of middle class and low-income areas of Safaieh; and employment opportunities on relocating migrants from nearby villages and cities into this area. Then, the socio-culturalSocio-cultural connections of the natives to their older neighbourhoods as well as outside of YazdYazd are considered. Finally, it is discussed as to why an international shoeShoe is used to symbolise Safaieh.
