Nersi/Nasr-Abad Neighbourhood of Old Fabric

This chapter studies the diurnal activities and memories of the ZoroastrianZoroastrian and Muslim communities of Nersi/Nasr-AbadNersi/Nasr-Abad (Figs 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3). Although both communities were surveyed, the ethnographical investigation focused on the Zoroastrian communityCommunity as the placePlace was, originally, formed and developed by this communityCommunity. In this neighbourhoodNeighbourhood, 91 questionnaires were completed and 12 interviews were done. Participants were of different ages and occupations; of whom 46 were Zoroastrian, 45 were Muslim, and those remaining were unknown. The chapter begins with general information about the neighbourhoodNeighbourhood. It lives through anecdotal tales and sources regarding various names given to the neighbourhoodNeighbourhood over time; its official, traditional, and religious boundariesReligious boundaries; as well as the physical formation and development of the area. Then, the decisive reasons for the locals to remain in this old neighbourhoodNeighbourhood are argued. Likewise, the chapter debates the questions concerning the district’s dearth of public spaces and places; how ZoroastrianZoroastrian traditional dwellingsZoroastrian traditional dwellings are perceived as a communityCommunity identityIdentity; and the matter relating to the religious connection existing amongst the Zoroastrian and Muslim inhabitants. The chapter then discusses the socio-culturalSocio-cultural interrelationships of Nersi/Nasr-AbadNersi/Nasr-Abad with other areas of YazdYazd as well as outside of the city followed by using a national shoeShoe as a symbol of the Zoroastrian communityCommunity of the neighbourhoodNeighbourhood.
