Fahadan Neighbourhood of the Historic Fabric

This chapter examines the present social fabricSocial fabric of the FahadanFahadan neighbourhoodNeighbourhood through its inhabitants’ everyday activities and memories (Figs 4.1, 4.2,and 4.3). The chapter subsequently aims to determine those factors influencing the residents of Fahadan to live in this traditional neighbourhoodNeighbourhood. For this investigation, 95 questionnaires were gathered and 19 interviews were completed accompanied with ethnographical findings. This chapter, at first, provides general information of FahadanFahadan. It discusses the myths and stories of different names attributed to the neighbourhoodNeighbourhood over time; its traditional and official localized boundaries; as well as its history of formation and development. Through triangulation, the chapter then ethnographically ascertains the inhabitants’ day-to-day activities while referring to the data gathered from the questionnaires and narrative interviews in order to manifest noteworthy reasons affecting the indigenous residents to remain in this historic neighbourhoodNeighbourhood. While highlighting these substantial motivations, the chapter discusses certain urban and physical changes such as demolishing some traditional housing, functional changes within traditional dwellingsTraditional dwellings, creating private alleys, and the painting of adobe walls; all of which have been done by the locals enabling them to remain in Fahadan. Likewise, the effects of intolerant attitudes displayed towards the Afghan people on the physical and social fabrics of Fahadan are considered. The chapter argues the significance of mutual socio-culturalSocio-cultural interrelationships of Fahadan with the Old and New Fabrics, as well as outside of the city. Finally, the chapter argues as that how the social fabricSocial fabric of Fahadan can be symbolised by a traditional desertDesert shoeShoe.
