Plant Based Biofuels: A Sustainable Energy Source

Plant-based biofuels are renewable energy sources that are derived from organic matter, such as agricultural crops, forest residues, or algae and are considered as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels, as they are renewable and have a lower carbon footprint. The present work provides an overview of plant-based biofuels, including their production, potential, and challenges. The work further focuses on the different types of plant-based feedstocks used for biofuel production, such as sugarcane, corn, soybeans, and palm oil, and the different biofuel production processes, including fermentation and transesterification. The potential benefits of plant-based biofuels, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy security, and providing economic opportunities for farmers are elaborately discussed. The chapter concludes by discussing the current state of plant-based biofuel production, ongoing research, and future opportunities for sustainable and environmentally responsible biofuels. Overall, this book chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the plant-based biofuels landscape, which can inform and guide future policy and research efforts towards sustainable energy production. Ongoing research and development is focused on improving the efficiency and sustainability of plant-based biofuels, as well as developing new feedstocks and production processes. Finally, the work highlights the current state of research and development, and the potential for future advances in plant-based biofuel technology.
