‘It’s a Long Way!’ The Gender Perspective in Archaeology Museums

In this article I analyse the extent to which Spanish research linked to feminist and gender archaeologies has resulted in the incorporation of a gender perspective into Spanish archaeological museums. Therefore, and based on my study, I differentiate between three groups. The first includes those museums which continue to ignore the need to reflect gender relations and still render women invisible in their accounts of the past. The second group comprises those institutions which are receptive to the need to incorporate such studies into their museums and which do so mainly through temporary exhibitions and workshops focusing on the value of education in equality. The third group is made up of newly created or recently renovated museums whose guiding parameters and awareness include the need to incorporate a gender perspective into their institutions and do so more or less successfully. Finally, I highlight a few proposals which, from our own point of view, might contribute to the incorporation of a gender perspective into archaeological museums.
