Comorbidities of AD

The impact of atopic dermatitis (AD) often extends beyond the skin, and there is increasing appreciation for the systemic nature of AD. Great attention has been paid to understanding what diseases are associated with AD. In this chapter, we discuss common allergic and proposed non-allergic comorbidities of AD, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, obesity, impaired bone health and cardiovascular disease. We will also highlight the possible roles chronic inflammation and skin barrier dysfunction appear to play in the multimorbidity of AD.
