Conclusions and Perspectives

Risk assessment and mitigation of Slow-Onset Disasters (SLODs) linked to climate-change affecting the urban Built Environment (BE) could be faced through innovative methodologies based on a “behavioural-based” and multi-risk approach. This approach is behavioural-based since relies on the analysis of the users’ behaviours, time-dependent BE fruition rules, needs and responses to critical conditions due to several SLODs (e.g., average temperature rise, heat waves, average air pollutant rise, fog). Moreover, the approach is oriented towards multi-riskRisk assessmentMulti risk because it tries to combine the SLODs effects on users’ health in different scenarios (in this book, heat stress and air pollution distress) by exploiting simulation models and combined metrics on risk assessment and mitigation strategies effectiveness. In particular, the main application could relate to the urban open spaces, such as streets and squares, where the SLODs effects on the BE users are more evident and linked to behavioural issues outdoors as well as to short-term exposure. This book offers the methodological definition and application to representative case studies of the behavioural-based approachBehavioural based approach and of its related tools, by then demonstrating the capabilities of the proposed single to multi-risk perspective in the assessment of risk levels and comparison of effectiveness of different mitigation strategies. Nevertheless, the capabilities of the approach use should be extended, and thus further activities are needed. This chapter provides an overview of the main goals reached by the research, as well as of the demonstrated capabilities of the approach. Then, it also traces the next steps for the approach development and application from both the researchers and stakeholders’ standpoint (mainly, for designers and local administrations).
