Evaluation of Urban Freight Distribution in a Medium-Sized City: Ecuadorian Case Study

Urban freight distribution (UFD) plays an important role in the economic development of cities. However, distribution in cities with limited road capacity or management can lead to increased traffic congestion and higher CO2 emissions. Therefore, cities must carefully analyze UFD to ensure proper mobility management, sustainability, and safety. Despite its significance, in Ecuador, only large cities recognize the need for UFD, while medium or small cities remain unaware of its importance. The objective of this study is to evaluate urban freight distribution in a medium-sized city, specifically in the city center of Loja, Ecuador. Data was collected through a virtual survey, and the UFD sites were georeferenced, characterized, and classified. Additionally, problematic sites affecting mobility and road safety were identified. For these critical sites, the proposal includes implementing loading and unloading zones. This straightforward and practical methodology can be applied in similar cities. The results obtained from this study can inform infrastructure modifications, enhanced control measures, the promotion of relevant legislation, or the development of educational plans.
