Unraveling the Complexities of Chronic Armed Conflicts: Patterns, Predictability, and Uncertainties

  • Yair Neuman

摘要

This chapter delves into the intricate dynamics of chronic armed conflictsArmed conflict, which exhibit discernible patterns and a notable element of unpredictability owing to their power lawPower law distribution and long tails. An extensive examination of a dataset encompassing the period 2000–2022 shows that the system in question incorporates a long-range memory. However, I suggest using the Tsallis entropyTsallis entropy as a measure of system complexity, as this can enhance the predictive accuracy of future fatality estimates. I explain that, despite the alleged predictability of the crowd’s behavior, it is the uncertainty factor which is the difference that makes a difference.
