Introduction to Multiple Myeloma and Multiple Myeloma Bone Disease

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant disease characterized by proliferation of clonal plasma cells that are derived from post-germinal center B lymphoid cells in the bone marrow [1, 2]. The median age at diagnosis is 69, and it most frequently is diagnosed among those aged 65–74 years. There will be an estimated 34,470 new cases of MM in 2022, accounting for 1.8% of all new cancer cases in 2022 and approximately 10–15% of all hematologic malignancies (Perrot 2022). There will be an estimated 12,640 deaths from MM in 2022. MM has an incidence of 7.1 per 100,000 in the US per year, with higher incidence among non-Hispanic blacks. The estimated prevalence of the disease as of 2019 was 159,787 [3].
