Introduction

On the occasion of the 80th birthday of Emeritus Univ.-Prof. Dr. Christian Brünner, the Karl-Franzens-University Graz organized a symposium with the theme “Sustainability in Outer Space” in June 2022. The symposium addressed important questions about the future of space utilization and was led and attended by distinguished experts in the field of space law. The symposium was entirely focused on the importance of sustainability in space and discussed how to ensure that activities in space are consistent with sustainability goals. It focused on the role of space law in promoting sustainability in space and how space law could evolve to meet future sustainability challenges, minimize environmental impact, and preserve space resources in the long term.
