Mindfulness-Based Programs for Children with Developmental Challenges

  • Herman Hay Ming Lo

摘要

There is a growing interest in the application of MBPs to support children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. This chapter reviews the evidence regarding the benefits of mindfulness among children and adolescents diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and intellectual disability (ID). While there is accumulating evidence supporting the benefits of MBPs for children with ADHD, the positive outcomes for children with ASD and ID are inconsistent and limited. The chapter discussed the limitations found in existing studies, including small sample sizes, a scarcity of studies with active control groups, and uncertainty regarding the maintenance effects of MBPs. Additionally, the chapter examines various practice issues, such as the role of parent parallel programs, arrangements for home practice, and strategies for managing child behavior in group programs.
