The Effects of Endocrine Active Substances on Soil Invertebrates (Literature Review)

In the last 20 years, only few studies have addressed the effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on soil invertebrates. Thus, we performed a literature review in order (1) to compile the knowledge of endocrine effects on such organisms via a literature review, (2) to identify potentially useful test species and endpoints for evaluating and assessing endocrine effects of chemicals on soil invertebrates, and (3) to develop recommendations for suitable tests, based on criteria such as sensitivity and practicability. Full life-cycle testing is required to identify potential adverse effects of EDCs. Based on the outcome of a scoring process, we propose to develop, validate, and standardize life-cycle tests with reproductive as well as EDC-specific endpoints. Both soft- and hard-bodied as well as meso- and macrofauna groups should be represented in such a test battery: Enchytraeidae, Collembola, Isopoda, and Lumbricidae. Instead, basic research should be performed to better understand the ecological relevance of effects on and the sensitivity of these organisms.
