Display Collections in Botanical Gardens: For Scientific Study and Aesthetic Value
摘要
Context/Purpose: This is the study of biological and ecological characteristics of plants, development of methods for their cultivation and preservation in Botanical gardens, greater variety of assortment, and display of collections. From an ecological and educational point of view, this work promotes knowledge by the public about ornamental plants and shows all the diversity and beauty of the plant world. • Methods: In creating the display collection, we used data from long-term observations on plants of two large genera: Philadelphus L. and Spiraea L., under nursery conditions such as height, shape, texture, colour of leaves and flowers, duration and timing of flowering, aroma and winter hardiness of plants. • Results: In the process of studying the external characteristics and adaptive capabilities of these plants in the climate of the Moscow region, 45 species and varieties of mock oranges and spiraeas were included in the display. The Philadelphus collection is represented by a number of species and varieties of domestic and foreign breeding: in total, three species, two forms, and 24 varieties; the Spiraea genus is represented by seven species and 21 varieties. All are plants with high winter hardiness and the best decorative characteristics. • Interpretation: This long-term research work has made it possible to select the most ecologically stable and ornamental varieties and species representing the genera Philadelphus and Spiraea from all available varieties and species, and on that basis to create a display collection of flowering shrubs. In addition, as a decorative part of the botanical garden, this display allows for on-site observations and scientific research. • Conclusion: The display is multifunctional, allowing observations and scientific research. It promotes the dissemination of biological and ecological knowledge among the public, and helps landscapers and gardeners use the offered reliable and ornamental plants for landscaping purposes as successfully as possible.
