Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Using Sentinel-2A Image: Assessment of Depth Derivation Models in Shallow Waters

This study focuses on mapping the bathymetry of the Oussja Ghar El Meleh (OGM) coastal area, of the Lower Medjerda river basin, to be used for coastal water management. In this study, a satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) method was applied as part of the Copernicus program, offering regular and repetitive image acquisition at a spatial resolution of 10 m. The resulting bathymetric map revealed a depth range of the OGM coastal area varying between 4.52 and − 14.95 m (WGS 84/UTM zone 32N). The research findings highlight the benefits of employing the downscaled Sentinel-2 coastal aerosol band 1 for satellite-derived bathymetry mapping, primarily owing to its exceptional water penetration capabilities. The Sentinel-2 satellite system developed as part of the European Union’s Copernicus program for Earth observation is proving to be of vital importance in filling crucial gaps in information on the spatial distribution of bathymetry, particularly in regions where data is scarce or difficult to access. In addition, its use offers a rapid, non-intrusive retrospective assessment.
